Amazon is ‘striking a deal’ with EA to produce a Mass Effect show

Something I look forward to: Original shows and movies are one of the main ways streaming services seek to attract new subscribers. We’re sure hits like Netflix’s Arcane and Amazon’s Wheel of Time are great examples of that trend. However, Amazon could have another big debut in the works now: The company’s original content division is developing a new series based on BioWare’s popular Mass Effect series.

This information is courtesy of a Deadline report, published yesterday. According to the medium, Amazon Studios is “approaching a deal“with Electronic Arts to create such a series, although details such as number of episodes or length are obviously unknown at such an early stage.

Regardless, this is great news for longtime BioWare fans. Although Mass Effect’s latest release, Andromeda, wasn’t exactly well received by gamers, previous games still hold their own today. The quality of its gameplay mechanics varies from title to title, but the excellent storytelling is still considered some of the best in the industry.

Of course, as any gamer will tell you, translations of popular game franchise shows or movies don’t always translate the things that made the franchise great. As such, there is no guarantee that a Mass Effect show will have the same side stories and compelling characters as the games. However, Amazon has a strong track record in the original content production space, so there is reason to be optimistic; especially if EA is willing to risk the reputation of one of its most famous franchises.

Hopefully, the deal works out between Amazon Studios and EA. Even if the show ends up being terrible, it will at least be good to see the Mass Effect universe in a way we’ve never done before.
