The England and Wales Cricket Council (ECB) published a 12-point action plan on Friday to address racism and discrimination in sport, including a review of the ‘locker room culture’ across teams and a focus on standardized for whistleblowing.
The move comes after several players, including former Yorkshire player Azeem Rafiq, alleged they were victims of institutional racism at their clubs.
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Plan promises a redesigned plan for player and coach education, as well as a mentoring program for cricketers from diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Teams will also be required to diversify their boards of directors by April 2022, with a commitment to having 30% women and a representative ethnicity.

“We have now made a series of commitments across the game so that cricket can begin to make the transformation that we know is necessary,” said ECB Acting President Barry O’Brien.
“Change is urgently required, but we also recognize that sustained action is required over months and years to achieve fundamental and lasting progress. This should start today. “
The ECB said it would establish a new anti-discrimination unit within six months and also promised to remove “structural and cultural barriers” in its elite talent paths.
“For cricket to truly ‘connect communities and improve lives’, our stated goal at the ECB, we must begin by accepting that not enough has happened to improve our game,” said ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison.
“That is the only possible reaction to the powerful testimony of Azeem Rafiq and others in recent weeks.”
