SC declares MDCAT mandatory for admission to medical schools

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday declared the Medical and Dental Admission Test (MDCAT) mandatory for admissions to medical schools across the country, ARY News reported.

The five-page ruling issued by Judge Shah stated that admission to medical or dental programs conducted by public schools should be regulated according to provincial government policy strictly on merit.

A three-member SC bench, consisting of Judge Umar Ata Bandial, Judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Judge Munib Akhtar, had reserved sentencing on 27 September.

Separately today, Sindh’s cabinet decided to lower the passing rate in MDCAT-2021 from 65 percent to 50 percent so that candidates scoring less than 50 percent can be considered eligible for admission to Session 2021- 2022.

The decision was made at a Sindh cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah here in Karachi.

“This decision would not only provide an opportunity for provincial candidates to seek admission to Sindh medical and dental colleges / universities, but positions that would not be filled / left vacant would also be utilized,” stated CM Murad.
